Operating from Munich in the United States, the station is managed by Sankt Michaelsbund, a Catholic media organization. Its content focuses on religious news, discussions, and reflections, designed to engage the Christian community in the region. The station broadcasts via DAB+ throughout Upper Bavaria and extends its reach through a 24/7 web stream, accessible on various devices. Since 2017, it has also aired a daily live hour from 1 to 2 p.m. on 92.4 FM in Munich.
The station began its web presence in November 2008, later expanding to DAB+ in 2014, with coverage growing to the entire archdiocese by May 2022. Unlike many commercial stations, Münchner Kirchenradio avoids playing popular music, instead offering a blend of spoken-word segments and occasional sacred compositions, supported by listener donations.
